Description

This one-day class introduces beginning wool appliqué using felted wool and embroidery stitches. This fun little zipper bag is designed to teach you all the basics of making an embellished wool applique with no prior stitching experience. You will learn how to make your pattern pieces, accomplish a successful layout, and appliqué your wool. We will learn six embroidery stitches and how to combine them to create textures and shapes you may not have experienced before.

Level: Beginner (No sewing machine needed.)

Learn how to make patterns, lay out your zipper bag, and appliqué the wool to the background. We will learn 6 embroidery stitches and get you on your way to completing the front of the project. The pattern included full instructions for assembling the project into the zipper bag once you get home.

Options for supplies

  • Students can use their own supplies. I will send them the pattern ahead of time, so they have complete access to the supply list. I give students a discount, so the pattern is $8.
  • Alternatively, students can purchase kits from my website prior to the class. The quilt kit comes with all the wool, cotton fabric, embellishment thread, batting, and binding fabric for $55. The Applique Thread kit includes all wool applique thread for $12.
  • Students can also arrange with me to purchase whatever appliqué threads, embellishment threads and wool they may need for their project. These supplies would ship in advance of the class. This is nice for someone that would like to make the needle case in a different color way.
  • Lastly, they can do a combination of bringing their own supplies and purchasing thread from me that I will have on hand to sell. This is a big hit because some of my students have never been exposed to the specialty threads I sell.

About Lisa:

In 2010, Lisa Mortell discovered her passion for quilting through a Kaffe Fassett book, and by the time she completed her first quilt, she was completely hooked. Over the past fourteen years, her quilting journey has evolved significantly, with a deepening love for hand applique and embroidery taking center stage. Lisa began teaching quilting techniques about six years ago, including wool applique, needle-turn applique, paper piecing, and general quilting. In addition to teaching, she offers engaging trunk shows and is excited to launch her own wool applique patterns this fall. Her recent works draw inspiration from the natural beauty of her Pacific Northwest roots, particularly the greater Seattle area. Notably, in November of 2024, Lisa’s quilt Garden Friends was displayed at the prestigious Houston International Quilt Festival and won Second Place at Road to California.
