Description
The Scottish Rite Consistory building is one of downtown Des Moines’ most historic landmarks. Located at 6th Avenue and Park Street, this amazing example of craftsmanship was built in 1926 under the leadership and direction of William Koch, E.T. Meredith and Henry Nollen, officers of the Des Moines Valley of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.
The craftsmanship of the building harkens back to a different time. Carved walnut woodwork, marble columns, and intricately molded plasterwork, gives the Des Moines Consistory unique look all its own. Designed by Roland Harrison and Frank Weatherall, it is one of the outstanding buildings in Central Iowa and has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1983.
The Scottish Rite Consistory has been host to hundreds of events over the last ninety years. From educational or political events to ballets and plays, to testimonial banquets honoring notables of Iowa, this historic building is an intimate part of our Iowa heritage. We greatly appreciate your support and belief in preserving and protecting it for future generations.
