(A double bill)

The Dying Swan and Its Cause of Death. Performed by Hana Sakai, Direction/text by Toshiki Okada

Encounter, Choreography by Moto Takahashi MWMW

In the The Dying Swan  and Its Cause of Death., Hana Sakai, one of Japan's leading prima ballerinas, dances the classic Fokine ballet to Saint-Saëns’ Le Cygne, accompanied by cellist Udai Shika, then immediately begins to  wobble while speaking about why she, the swan, had to die–a hilarious riff on the original by visionary director/playwright Toshiki Okada that delves into environmental issues. Encounter, the companion piece in the double bill, is choreographed by Moto Takahashi and performed by her all-woman dance group MWMW, who challenge gender norms with their stunning hip-hop techniques and ensemble movements.

Toshiki Okada (Playwright/Director) is a theater artist, novelist and founder of the theater company chelfitsch. His work has attracted attention worldwide for its overturning of theater conventions. In 2005, his play Five Days in March won the prestigious Kishida Kunio Drama Award and he was a finalist for the Toyota Choreography Award. He made his fiction-writing debut in 2007 with the collection of short stories "The End of the Special Time We Were Allowed,” which won the Oe Kenzaburo Prize the following year. In 2016, he undertook  a four -season commission from the Münchner Kammerspiele, one of the foremost public theaters in Germany, to direct work for its repertoire. He staged Pratthana – A Portrait of Possession, adapted from a novel by Thai author Uthis Haemamool, in Bangkok, at the Festival d’Automne in Paris, and at Resonance 2019 in Tokyo. chelfitschToshiki Okada's troupe,  is applauded for its unique use of language and physicality, and is widely considered, both inside and outside Japan, as one of the leaders of contemporary theater.  Learn more about Toshiki Okada

About PS21

A vibrant center for contemporary performance in the Hudson Valley, PS21 “presents work that challenges and invites” (The New York Times): adventurous productions by leading and emerging American and international artists in music, dance, and theater, and visionaries creating entirely new genres. On our open-air Pavilion Theater stage, across our expansive, unspoiled grounds, and in the diverse surrounding communities, PS21 cultivates and presents productions that transcend aesthetic boundaries and revitalize existing artistic languages and grammars. Throughout the year, we host developmental residencies for dancers, musicians, actors, and creators of original, even unclassifiable new work. Rooted in community collaboration, PS21’s programming engages creatively with critical global and social issues. It is a mecca for innovative and original artistic voices, a destination for performance that can be experienced nowhere else in the region. PS21’s Pavilion Theater is a green-energy marvel surrounded by 100 acres of unspoiled meadows, trails, and woodlands that are a haven to wildlife and visitors across the region.  Integrated into our unspoiled campus, the theater embodies our commitments to the public: open, inviting, and optimized for their enjoyment and encouraging citizen expression and participation.
