Description

FIVE YEARS, a single-channel projection of thousands of clips from rural New York (2019–2024), brings daily life alive—hands digging, sunlight on a kitchen table, conversations in parking lots, a taxidermy auction, summer parades, music drifting, quiet glances, fleeting encounters.

Created by the Obie Award–winning theater company 600 HIGHWAYMEN, (“one of New York’s best nontraditional theater companies” — The New Yorker) the work unfolds during a time when the country seemed to be coming apart, alongside larger events: rural rituals, holidays, the birth of a child, the pandemic, waves of social and political unrest. Red hats and protest signs. Silence and shouting. Life and politics collide—tender, tense, unresolved. Humor and unease, intimacy and allegiance coexist.

Over five years, the everyday—the hands, the sunlight, the music—exists alongside the force of the natural world and the fraught American landscape. The work invites viewers to sit inside the contradictions of a country fragile, messy, and alive.

Currently residing in Arles, France, 600 HIGHWAYMEN (Abigail Browde & Michael Silverstone) have been creating original performances since 2009. Their work sits at the intersection of theater, dance, and civic encounter, stripping performance to its essentials: people sharing space and attention. Hailed by The New Yorker as “one of New York’s best nontraditional theater companies” and by Le Monde as “the standard-bearers of contemporary theater-making,” their work has toured widely across the U.S. and internationally, including Centre Pompidou, Salzburg Festival, Singapore International Festival of Arts, and the American Repertory Theater.
