Description
Since their first collaboration in 2018 on Intimate Strangers—a project commissioned by John Zorn and National Sawdust—Sara Serpa and Matt Mitchell have forged a profound musical connection. Their partnership thrives on spontaneity, trust, and an uncanny ability to follow each other into uncharted improvisational territory.
In their duo, Serpa and Mitchell explore boundless possibilities within intimate musical spaces. Like the infinite numbers between zero and one, their compositions and improvisations uncover vast sonic landscapes. Their music intertwines Serpa’s voice—shifting between sound, text, and instrumental textures—with Mitchell’s piano, which moves fluidly through intricate structures.
Recorded in December 2023, their new album End of Something showcases a mesmerizing interplay of micro-gestures, a hyper-focus on subtle dynamics, and a blend of composed and improvised material. The result is a delicate, ever-morphing sound world at the intersection of jazz and contemporary classical music. Serpa and Mitchell invite listeners into a space of quiet intensity and discovery, where the small becomes expansive and the unexpected thrives.
