Description
Radical Black students, leftist white suburbanites, and a carousel: an untold story of the early Civil Rights Movement.
In 1960, five Howard University students staged a protest at a segregated Maryland carousel, sparking the first organized interracial civil rights demonstration in U.S. history. Their arrests made national headlines. When white neighbors joined the Black students in picketing Glen Echo Amusement Park, an extraordinary, history-making partnership was born. The picket line drew Nazis, Congressmen, and the press; it also incubated future Freedom Riders—including Stokely Carmichael—and set the stage for a Supreme Court case.
With never-before-seen archival footage and immersive storytelling, Emmy Award–winning director Ilana Trachtman (Praying with Lior, The Pursuit) brings this forgotten episode to light. Featuring voiceover performances by Jeffrey Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Bob Balaban, Lee Grant, Peter Gallagher, Dominique Thorne, Alysia Reiner, and Tracie Thoms, Ain’t No Back to a Merry-Go-Round reclaims a hidden chapter in civil rights history and reveals the power of ordinary people heeding the impulse to activism.
