WORKSHOP:  Clown Rot

Alex Tatarsky, a clown by trade, is interested in all the ways we can fall apart on stage, break down, break things down, be in the brokenness, decay, decompose and freak out.
In our four hours together, we will play amidst the mess, attempt to be possessed rather than possess, and learn from the figure of the clown—for whom failure is a gift.  An attempt to follow pleasure amidst impossible circumstances. Delight in the dirt. Turn our shit into gold. For writing inspiration, we will look to the compost heap and the garbage can.

this class is for:
clowns and clown adjacent performers
writers who want to "write with the body" or "write on their feet"
playful people and curious people of all stripes! (who are down to wiggle around a bunch)
everyone from total newbies to grizzled old freak is totally welcome

people should bring:
clothes you feel comfortable moving in
a pen and paper/notebook
an object -- any regular old thing you have in your home or trash can or backpack or whatever) that gives you a strong FEELING of some kind (could be delight, disgust, anger, ecstasy...)

$60
16 people max
Sunday January 25, 11 am - 3 pm

~Bio~

A “hilarious, finely tuned absurdist” (Theatre Jones), Alex Tatarsky makes performances in the uncomfortable in-between zone of comedy, dance-theater, performance art, and deluded rant--sometimes with songs. Tatarsky experienced fleeting fame as Andy Kaufman’s daughter and used to perform as a mound of dirt. They are currently touring their falling apart bildungsroman about wanting to die, Sad Boys in Harpy Land, and their compost clown lecture-performance Dirt Trip. Venues include Abrons Arts Center, La Mama, MoMA PS1, Playwrights Horizons, The Kitchen, The Whitney Biennial and many bars and basements. As curatorial fellow at the Poetry Project, they organized a series on the poetics of rot. Current research interests include magic tricks, soil remediation, and pageantry. @tartar.biz

Tatarsky has taught everywhere from universities to abandoned storefronts including at The New School, The Pig Iron School, and Celebration Barn. They have given artist talks and lectures around the US and Canada at illustrious institutions including Harvard, MIT, The Canadian Centre for Architecture, and The Clark Art Institute. While teaching, Tatarsky draws upon their training at the Pig Iron School, a 2-year Lecoq-based clown and devised theater program, their past in literary and translation studies, their scholarship in Performance Studies at NYU, and ongoing study with various movement artists, thinkers, and co(s)mic freaks.
