Description

As we mark 180 years since Congregation Rodeph Sholom’s founding, we draw on a dynamic history of change and transformation. In this three-session course, Rabbi Spratt will dive into some of the key ideas in his book Awakenings. Bringing nuance and complexity to the trends of American Judaism today, together we will begin to imagine the exciting future that rises before us.

SESSION 1: Rumblings (JANUARY 19, 7:00-8:30 PM)

We will examine the common harbingers of American Judaism’s present situation: declining synagogue membership, rising intermarriage, and burgeoning antisemitism. By analyzing the narratives surrounding them, we will draw wisdom from prior eras of the Jewish experience and note the possibilities that now bloom.

SESSION 2: Transformations (MARCH 1, 7:00-8:30 PM

We will study some of the trends of change in American Judaism, noting in particular the transformations taking place over the past two decades in how we understand identity, leadership, and belonging in American Judaism today. And we will name some of the losses and challenges that can also unfold into new opportunities.

SESSION 3: Awakenings (APRIL 18, 7:00-8:30 PM)

In this final session in which we will lift up the trends we’ve been talking about, we will explore some of the struggles of American Judaism today and the ideas that may come to define its next chapter. By studying examples both within and beyond Rodeph Sholom, we can give texture to the future of our community and to the larger landscape of American Judaism.
