Description

Join us for an introduction to some of the wild edible plants of the Indiana Dunes region.  We will begin with an overview of some of the plants that have been used for thousands of years at different points in the year.  Participants will learn some of the essential beliefs and practices that indigenous peoples worldwide use when approaching plants for use as food or medicine.  These are especially important because they ensure sustainability of our ecosystems for the next generations. These ancient traditions look at plants as our relatives who we must treat with the utmost respect.

We will also learn how to identify specific plants that are used for food and/or medicine in our area. This will include an outdoor hike where participants will learn the kind of soil and conditions where each plant grows. They will also learn about companion plants and will distinguish any plants that might be poisonous look-alikes. The workshop will include an indoor component where we will enjoy some simple foods and infusions/teas.  Each participant will receive a handout with pictures of the plants and explanations of how to find, prepare and enjoy them at home.

Ezekiel Flannery has been living, gardening and eating (!) in the Indiana Dunes area for the past 15 years.  He has a PhD in the sociology of food and nutrition with a focus on indigenous sciences (in Europe, Asia and the Americas) and sustainable cultures of food.  Since he was a child, he has studied herbalism formally and informally in the United States and Mexico, and has a great respect for the power of plants.  Ezekiel tremendously enjoys learning about as many plants that are called “weeds” as possible, and using them in the kitchen in crazy culinary creations!
