Tuesdays with Andrew Galarneau
Andrew Galarneau, an independent digital journalist offering his food report at fourbites.net, invites you to dig into Burmese cuisine on March 19 at Downtown Bazaar, 617 Main St. It’s the first in a monthly series of culinary exploration sessions at Downtown Bazaar, each featuring a cuisine that you can sample, savor, and explore, led by Galarneau.
Burmese 101 will be held from 5 pm-6:30 pm and will feature Pattaya Street Food. Try an assortment of Burmese dishes, including onho khao swe and tea leaf salad, the Burmese national dish. It’s made with tea leaves that have been fermented like sauerkraut instead of dried for beverages.
Burmese cooks have broadened Buffalo’s collective menu for more than a decade. In 2010, in the back of a grocery at 1989 Niagara St., Kevin Lin fed Andrew Galarneau his first taste of Burmese cuisine. That bowl of coconut chicken noodle soup, ohno khao swe, changed Galarneau’s life.
That grocery became the first Sun Cuisines restaurant, with Lin and his wife Stephanie opening a second in Williamsville. Sun was followed by a dozen Burmese restaurants in Erie County, most serving Thai dishes too. Galarneau, as food editor for The Buffalo News, became a student of Burmese cuisine.
