The Cape Fear Bonsai Society has secured limited-term permitted access (120-day window) to a local site for native bonsai material collection.

This event is organized as an official CFBS program and is limited to current members. Participation is managed through registration to ensure compliance with site access requirements and to provide a structured opportunity for collection.

Additional outing dates may be added during the permit window. If a date is full or not yet listed, you may email cfbs.ilm@gmail.com to express interest in future outings.

Participants will meet at the designated location, consolidate vehicles, and proceed to the site as a group.

Participation Requirements:

  • Must be a current CFBS member in good standing (approved participant under the site permit)

  • Registration required in advance

  • Attendance is limited; waitlist may be used

  • Agree at checkout to waiver : Participation involves uneven terrain, tools, and inherent risks. By selecting “I agree,” you voluntarily assume all risks and agree to release and hold harmless the Cape Fear Bonsai Society, its organizers, volunteers, and the property owner from any claims or damages arising from your participation. You agree to follow all guidelines and act responsibly while on site.

Important:

  • No independent access — site visits occur only during scheduled CFBS events

  • Do not share location details outside registered participants

  • Collected material may be documented (including photographs) by CFBS to support landowner/permit requirements

  • Participants are responsible for their own safety

  • Final attendee list will be managed prior to site access

  • Collect only material you intend to remove that day; no pre-cutting or site preparation

  • Participants are responsible for restoring the site after collection—cut removed branches into manageable pieces and lay them flat, and fill all holes before leaving

What to Bring:

  • Hand tools (shovel, root saw, pruners)

  • Battery-powered Sawzall (recommended for larger material)

  • Fresh pruning blades (bring extras; blades dull quickly in sandy soil and roots)

  • Collection containers (bins, nursery pots, bags)

  • Water (for trees and people)

  • Boots / sturdy footwear

  • Work gloves

  • Bug spray / sun protection

  • Recommended: long sleeves and pants for protection

Site Access Notes:

  • Approximately 1.5 mile round-trip walk to and from the site

  • Uneven terrain, soft ground, and occasional standing water / puddles

  • Wagons or carrying assistance are recommended for transporting collected material

Registration closes two days before the outing (Thursday for weekend events) to allow for permit submission.
