Description

Join us for an exclusive rough-cut screening of Arizona’s Black American Barbers, a powerful documentary by filmmaker Dallas Teat that explores the deep cultural significance of Black barbershops in Arizona. Through personal stories, historical insights, and vivid imagery, this film highlights how barbershops have served as community pillars—providing not only haircuts but also a space for connection, activism, and cultural preservation.

For over twenty years, Dallas Teat has visually preserved portions of Arizona’s rich African American history. His portfolio includes documentaries for the G.W. Carver Museum and Cultural Center, the Arizona Department of Health Services, and the Arizona Commission of African American Affairs, and he is a respected faculty member with the Film and Media Production program at Glendale Community College (GCC). In 2023 the Arizona Commission for the Arts awarded Dallas a grant to continue his research on this project, which began 15 years ago when he first interviewed six of Phoenix’s oldest and most iconic African American barbers. Our organization is proud to have recently contributed to this ongoing research, helping to highlight the legacy of this important piece of Arizona history.
