About the panelists:
Marina Pacini - Moderator
Marina Pacini retired as Chief Curator and Curator of American, Modern, and Contemporary Art in 2019 after eighteen years at the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Throughout her career, her primary focus has been on women artists and artists of color. Among the exhibitions she organized are Marisol: Sculptures and Works on Paper; Photographs from the Memphis World, 1949–1964; The Soul of a City: Memphis Collects African American Art; Veda Reed: Day into Night; and Memphis College of Art 1936 – 2000: An Enduring Legacy.
Martiza Davila-Irizarry - MCA faculty
Maritza Dávila is owner of Atabeira Press based in Memphis, Tennessee. She is a Professor Emeritus of the Memphis College of Art (1982-2018), an adjunct professor at the University of Memphis, and teaches workshops for various organizations. Dávila has exhibited worldwide and her work is held in collections at Biblioteca Nacional de España in Madrid, ES; Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris; Proyecto´ace in Buenos Aires; Museo de Historia, Antropología y Arte de la Universidad de Puerto Rico in San Juan; and the National Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., among others. She has received numerous awards for her work in the United States, Puerto Rico, and France.
Remy Miller - MCA faculty
Remy Miller is a painter living in Lakeland, TN. He was a faculty member and later Dean/VPAA at Memphis College of Art from 1987 to 2017. He was awarded Faculty Emeritus status in 2018. At MCA, Miller taught Drawing at all levels, 2-D Design, Color Studies, Collage, Watercolor and Painting at all levels. Long a proponent of Foundations education, he served as the Chair of Foundations at MCA at various times for about eleven years. He also served several stints as MCA Faculty Representative for about nine years. Since 1981, Miller has exhibited his work in various galleries, alternative spaces, schools, and museums across the United States. He was an artist-in-residence at the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan, Ireland and at the McNamara Foundation on Westport Island, Maine.
Jill Wissmiller - MCA faculty
Jill Wissmiller is a Midwestern farmer's daughter transplanted to the Midsouth where she can now often be found caked in glitter. Wissmiller uses glitter in her video installation work for its’ reflective quality that causes the flat surface of the screen to deepen visually and in turn expand the layers of meaning to reference bling and bling’s connection to power and finally as a nod to the ultimate bling and influence the stars. Her video work has been screened at a variety of venues both nationally and internationally, including the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, Moscow International Film Festival, and Electrofringe New Media Arts Festival Australia.
