AcA's Artist Roundups gather together artists and creatives for a casual night of making connections while also making art. By bringing artists of various backgrounds together, Artist Roundups hope to encourage dialogue and collaboration across artistic disciplines and create a shared sense of community and belonging.

In this session, led by dancer Cissy Whip, we'll build community and spark joy through Creative Movement. Using the art of dance, we will respond to the visual artwork in the Artists' Alliance show. We will use journaling to reflect on artwork and on the various movement explorations. Together, we will build some short dance phrases inspired by what we have experienced. This is a low-stress workshop that does not require prior knowledge of dance and can be adapted for any age or ability. Dress comfortably!

About the Facilitator

Cissy Whipp has been deeply involved in the dance world for most of her life, studying, teaching, choreographing, and performing. She co-founded Louisiana’s first professional modern dance company, Moving South Dance, which lasted through the 1980s, and toured nationally as a Kennedy Center Teaching Artist for 20 years. Since retiring as the Dance Specialist at the JW James Elementary, she returned to the Dance Program at UL Lafayette as an adjunct professor. Cissy was honored with the 2024 LINEAGE Award, which recognizes artists who have contributed a lifetime’s worth of creativity to the Acadiana region and beyond. She continues to choreograph and perform, collaborating with musicians, actors, poets, and dancers.

Our mission is fostering art and culture in Acadiana.

Founded in 1975, Acadiana Center for the Arts (“AcA”) is a community-supported nonprofit organization that fosters art and culture in Acadiana. Since its founding, AcA has developed as a major force, shaping the future of public education and community development in South Louisiana.

AcA supports the creation of new works of art, exhibits, festivals, performances, and public art across an eight-parish region that includes Acadia, Evangeline, Iberia, Lafayette, St. Landry, St. Martin, St. Mary, and Vermilion Parishes.  

AcA aims to bring equitable access to the arts and supports fair compensation of artists. On average, AcA serves over 300,000 people annually and provides fair compensation to 2,700 artists.  

In 2013, the AcA merged with the Performing Arts Society of Acadiana (“PASA”), whose mission was to educate, inspire, entertain, and culturally enrich the people of south Louisiana by providing local access to a diverse range of the performing arts. This merger supported the vision of both organizations and provided much-needed support to PASA’s programs. Founded in 1989, PASA served as a leading voice in the performing arts in South Louisiana for close to three decades.
