Description

"Because I Can” is a profound documentary that follows the story of Shelley Hunt, a mother of two young boys from Penticton, BC who co-founded a nationwide campaign of organ donation education after she discovered that she could save a life she never met.

Aidyn was diagnosed with enlarged kidneys at 26 weeks in utero and was rushed into surgery after being induced at 36 weeks. At four months old, Aidyn was put on peritoneal dialysis for 12 hours every night before upgrading to hemodialysis treatment to remove the toxins and waste his kidneys could not.

After approximately 350 days of dialysis, Aidyn was introduced to Shelly Hunt, Co-Founder of the Because I Can Project, a potential donor. Shelly had already begun the process to be an anonymous living kidney donor when she met Aidyn and his family but decided to donate to Aidyn, who was the same age as her son.

Using footage from the present and past, Shelley poetically narrates her journey through the process that eventually saved Aidyn's life. She exploresher experience in altruistic giving and weaves in several other characters and situations that were created in the wake of her actions through her foundation. Additionally, we get first hand insight from experts in the medical field narrated through interviews both new and previously captured.

"Because I Can" is an uplifting and inspirational story about the human condition, building a community and helping people as well as an educational look at our current situation. Saving a life for no other reason than "because I can." This film aims to spark a little bit of light into incredible situations that bring people together.
