Description

This light hearted 50’s comedy, written by John Van Druten, directed by Rosemary Summers, is about what happens when a “witch” in New York makes a lover of a very conventional man and then has to face the consequences when she really falls in love with him. (The TV Show “Bewitched” was based on this play!) Gillian Holroyd, played by CCP President Colleen Bunn, becomes interested in her upstairs neighbor and tenant and hexes him into falling in love with her. Shep Henderson (Andrew Munro), her quarry, is mystified, delighted and completely unaware that other worldly forces are at work. Despite the oddness of Gillian’s aunt, an endearingly addled old witch (Laurie Wehmeyer), and brother, a fun-loving warlock, (Mark Murphy), Shep is oblivious. He only knows that his life changed when he crossed over Gillian’s threshold. When she realizes that she is falling in love herself, Gillian faces a dilemma: she will lose her considerable powers if she acts on her feelings. Will love prevail?

BELL, BOOK AND CANDLE is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Dramatists Play Service.

Catskill Community Players

The Catskill Community Players is a not-for-profit community theater group founded in 1974 with the purpose of "promoting and presenting theater in the community". In 2016, the Catskill Community Players merged with Catskill Theatre Works, in a restructuring process, and attained non-profit status. The group typically produces two shows per year: recently mostly comedies and mysteries. Performances are given at the historic Wieting Theatre, in Worcester, NY. Over its 48 year history, other performance venues included South Kortright Central School's Harbaugh Hall, Stamford Central School, the Farrell Hall Little Theatre on the campus of SUNY Delhi, Delaware Academy, and Foothills Performing Arts Center. A complete listing of all the plays produced through the years by CCP can be found at www.catskillplayers.org. CCP operates under the direction of a board and follows non-profit bylaws. We draw from a vibrant theatre community of local actors, and talented directors & volunteer crew, which is constantly expanding. Auditions are open to anyone at all levels of experience. We always need help with sets, lighting, costumes, painting, ushering, sound, and all aspects of production! There is an opportunity to join as a member of CCP, and membership is drawn from the communities of Oneonta, Cooperstown, Worcester, Schenevus, South Kortright, Hobart, Stamford, Jefferson, Delhi, Franklin, and surrounding areas.
