We're making this September gathering at Forager Brewery a little extra special! Since it falls the night before Bethany's birthday, we're celebrating with a Birthday Eve Mahjong night—complete with birthday treats, a special giveaway, and plenty of time around the tables.
And this time, you can choose the play experience that's right for you: Mahjong 102: Guided Play or Social Play.
Whether you're still building your confidence or you're ready to play independently, we'd love to have you around our tables!
Mahjong Social Play is designed for players who are comfortable playing independently and ready to enjoy the game in a relaxed, social setting.
Choose Your Play Experience
🀄 Mahjong 102: Guided Play
Guided Play is designed for players who have learned the fundamentals of American Mahjong but would benefit from continued support while playing.
These tables are perfect if you understand the basics but still have questions about the Charleston, reading the NMJL card, choosing or changing hands, calling tiles, or the general flow of the game.
Bethany will circulate among the Guided Play tables to answer questions, offer suggestions, and help you build confidence as you play.
🀄 Social Play
Social Play is designed for players who are comfortable playing independently and ready to enjoy the game in a relaxed, social setting.
Players should have a foundational understanding of gameplay, including the Charleston, reading the card, and the general flow of the game.
Social Play tables will be largely self-directed. Bethany will be available for occasional questions and to help keep things running smoothly, but these tables will not receive the same level of instruction as Guided Play. This is social play only—no scorekeeping, just great games and great company.
All tables will play according to National Mah Jongg League rules. There will be no scorekeeping—just great games and great company

Help Us Build Your Table
Everyone is at a different stage in their Mahjong journey—and that’s a wonderful thing! Please select the level that best reflects how independently you can play today (rather than how comfortable you feel). This helps us create the best possible tables for everyone.
To create the best possible experience for everyone, tables will be thoughtfully organized by experience level based on registration and group size. When registering, you’ll be asked to select your comfort level so we can thoughtfully group players. Table groupings will be based on registrations and may be adjusted as needed to ensure the best experience for all players.
👉 If you’re unsure, we recommend choosing the lower level—we’ll make sure you’re well placed. Midwest Mahjong reserves the right to adjust table placements to create the best experience for all players.
Options:
Beginner+ (can play with minimal help)
You understand the basics and can play, but may need occasional reminders. You’ll do great in Social Play with others at a similar level.
Intermediate
You’re comfortable playing independently and understand the flow of the game, but may still be building confidence.
Experienced
You’re confident, consistent, and comfortable with the pace and strategy of the game.
Table Mate Request*
Please list your *requested* tablemates below. We will do our best to accommodate requests when possible. To help us honor requests, we recommend coordinating with your group so everyone signs up for the same option.
A few helpful notes:
Requests are best honored when groups of 4 register together.
Final table groupings may be adjusted to ensure the best experience for everyone.
