Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr. presents Big Chief Brian & Nouveau Bounce

Inspired by his Uncle Donald’s groundbreaking album Nouveau Swing, award-winning filmmaker, musician, and cultural leader Big Chief Brian Harrison Nelson has created a sound he calls “Nouveau Bounce.” Based in African drum rhythms and fused with New Orleans Bounce, traditional Masking Black Indian music, and contemporary jazz, Nouveau Bounce describes a new innovation in New Orleans’ musical identity. Brian has worked for years perfecting the Nouveau Bounce sound, collaborating with legendary New Orleans musicians and the acclaimed bounce producer BlaqNmilD in the studio, and bringing numerous percussionists and dancers to the stage show. This very special show on April 23, the Saturday of the first French Quarter Fest in three years, showcases Brian’s return to the stage with his own band after leading the Guardians of the Flame in touring musical stage shows for decades internationally and nationally. The Nouveau Bounce band will include an impressive stage show featuring African dancers, New Orleans dancers, a DJ, and African drumming.

The show will also feature an educational element, exploring the history and roots of Mardi Gras Indian culture and how it connects with the broader history of New Orleans’ musical culture through presentations by Maroon Queen Cherice Harrison-Nelson and our master of ceremonies Malik Bartholomew of "Know NOLA Tours". Brian is a well studied musician, having worked closely with his uncle Big Chief Donald Harrison Jr., Big Chief Donald Claude Sr., Danny and Blu Lue Barker, and 5th Ward Weebie
