Binding Agents Presents: November Cookbook Club ft. THE ZUNI CAFE COOKBOOK

  • November 20, 2025 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
  • St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi Event Hall

    712 Montrose Street
    Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19147
Description

Join us for November Cookbook Club: FRIENDSGIVING EDITION! We'll explore the enduring classic, The Zuni Cafe Cookbook, replacing the usual turkey with their famous roast chicken. That does mean we'll be looking for about 10 brave souls to roast chickens! But we'll also welcome folks to ignore the book (GASP!) and bring personal favorite Thanksgiving recipes from their own tables.

Each ticket this month includes a $5 donation to The People's Kitchen. We'll talk that evening about their work and other ways our community can support them.

We're bringing our roving party back to the basement event hall at St. Mary Magdalen de Pazzi Church—with many thanks to them for hosting. Do note that access to the space requires one flight of stairs. There is no elevator or ramp in the building. Contact us with any questions or accessibility needs; we'll do our best to help.

Cookbook Club is an potluck event where everyone contributes a dish from the selected book. Here's how it works:

1) You purchase your ticket(s) from this page, with or without a copy of the book.* (We highly encourage book sharing and use of libraries! You can also buy from Bookshop.org, which supports the shop and ships to your door.)

*To include a book for shop pickup with your purchase, select the discounted "Ticket + Book" option. You can then add the book to your cart after clicking "Checkout." Books will be available for pickup at Binding Agents starting November 12.

2) One week before the event, we'll send out a Google Doc with a set number of slots per category by which the book is organized, with additional slots this month for personal recipes. Each person will claim a slot with the recipe of their choice. This ensures a good spread and a cross-section of all the book has to offer.

3) On event day, you'll bring your dish to the venue, prepared to feast. We'll talk about our experience cooking and eating from the book or from our own histories, and leave with lots of great tips and new friends.

Space is limited! If the event sells out, please add yourself to the waitlist. You'll be the first to know if spots become available. To receive updates about future Cookbook Clubs (hosted monthly)—make sure you're on our mailing list.

ABOUT THE ZUNI CAFE COOKBOOK
In The Zuni Café Cookbook, a book customers had been anticipating for years, chef and owner Judy Rodgers provides recipes for Zuni's most well-known dishes, ranging from the Zuni Roast Chicken to the Espresso Granita. But Zuni's appeal goes beyond recipes. Harold McGee concludes, "What makes The Zuni Café Cookbook a real treasure is the voice of Zuni's Judy Rodgers," whose book "repeatedly sheds a fresh and revealing light on ingredients and dishes, and even on the nature of cooking itself." Deborah Madison (Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone) says the introduction alone "should be required reading for every person who might cook something someday."
