Scatterjazz presents this shatteringly-solid evening of sound sculpture at the Broadside.
Formed in the spring of 1998, BIRTH, based out of Cleveland and New York City, carved a musical niche with the sound of their no-holds-barred creative music. The trio was highly active in the US and Europe from its inception, constantly evolving their music and sound amidst the musically fertile NYC jazz scene where they were regular headliners at the Knitting Factory, and other iconic venues of the era such as Tonic in NYC, the Bop Shop in Rochester, and the Empty Bottle in Chicago. Beloved in their hometown and highly-influential beyond, BIRTH was voted "Best Cleveland Band of All-Time" by the outgoing editors from the Cleveland Free Times in its final edition. Saxophonist Joshua Smith, Bassist Jeremy Bleich, and drummer Joe Tomino are now spread widely around the country, but are reuniting for a short and fierce tour of the south and Midwest, with the initial stop at the Broadside Nola.
"So good that it's scary."

"Awesome and magnificent"

The evening will also feature an opening set by the long-running powerhouse duo TRAPPER KEAPER, featuring Will Thompson on keys and computers, and Marcello Benetti on drums, percussion and whistling. (In fact, Marcello is returning to Italy for the next six months on the morning after the gig, so do come say "Ciao!") TRAPPER KEAPER typically is joined by a special guest for spontaneous musical conversations without boundaries, and on this night they will be joined for the first time by legendary New Orleans guitarist CRANSTON CLEMENTS. Cranston's career transcends the list of folks he's played and toured with, which includes Dr. John, Boz Scaggs, Johnny Adams, Allen Toussaint, the Neville Brothers, Maria Muldaur, the New Orleans Guitar Masters, and so many more. His palette is boundless, and this will be a completely-unhinged-yet-tasteful delight.
