Songs of Sweetness & Sorrow
Metropolitan Opera mezzo-soprano Maya Lahyani and acclaimed guitarist Dan Nadel—both Israeli-born and New York-based—come together in a deeply personal and collaborative exploration of Israeli female lyricists and composers.
Rooted in the voices of creative women, this program weaves themes of home, peace, love, family, nature, consolation, and coexistence, emotions at once intimate and universal. These songs, drawn from across a millennium of Jewish traditions and diasporas, offer a poignant, often-overlooked narrative within the Israeli songbook: one of beauty, longing, fear, and hope.
Though Maya and Dan come from distinct musical worlds—opera houses, concert stages, and jazz clubs—this project brings their talents into harmony. Songs of Sweetness & Sorrow opens a window into their shared heritage and artistic vision, delivering a raw, resonant, and unforgettable musical experience that speaks from the soul of a people and the heart of its artists.
