Description

Have a telescope you’re not quite sure how to use—or haven’t used in years? Bring it to this hands-on, confidence-building workshop designed to help you get the most out of your stargazing experience! Whether you’ve just unboxed your first telescope or inherited a beloved but unfamiliar scope, this class will give you the skills and understanding you need to explore the night sky with ease.

We’ll begin with a friendly, beginner-focused introduction to the different types of telescopes, how they work, and the essential components you should know. You’ll learn practical tips on setup, alignment, focusing, and how to navigate the sky—information that will help you avoid common frustrations and make your observing sessions far more enjoyable.

After the overview, you’ll receive dedicated one-on-one time with our knowledgeable docents, who will work directly with you and your personal telescope. They’ll guide you step-by-step through operating your specific model, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring you feel completely comfortable using your equipment on your own.

Whether you’re hoping to see the rings of Saturn, the craters of the Moon, or deep-sky wonders far beyond, this class will empower you to unlock the full potential of your telescope. Leave feeling inspired, capable, and ready for your next night under the stars!

Email Stephanie at sd@rfo.org to inform her what type of scope you are bringing prior to the event so we can be best prepared to help you.

Attendance is limited and you MUST have a ticket to attend this event; tickets will not be sold at the door. Please note that tickets are non-refundable and cannot be used for future events unless cancelled by RFO. Unless you are notified otherwise by email, the event is not cancelled.

Please note, in the case of inclement weather on January 30th, we have an alternate date set for February 6th.

VIP tickets allow participants to park at the top parking lot next to the observatory, where they can unload their telescope next to their car. Regular Admission tickets will park in the white barn parking area and will need to carry their scope up to the top parking lot (about an 1/8 of a mile). Cost is $80 per telescope for VIP tickets and $65 per telescope for Regular Admission tickets. Costs include Sugarloaf Ridge State Park parking fee, and allows all members of a family coming with their scope.

RFO is operated by the Valley of the Moon Observatory Association, a 501(3)(c) nonprofit organization, and all of the proceeds will go towards maintaining this beloved Sonoma county institution.
