Description

John grew up in Southern Connecticut and New Marlborough Mass. He has been writing poetry since he was a young boy. He has also had a love affair with the Canadian wilderness all of his life. In the last 3 years he has published a volume of poetry and photography, “Quetico Connection” and also released a compilation album of music inspired by his poetry, “Coming Home to Quetico”. The seed for the album was inspired by a friend, Dar Williams, and incorporated many friends from all over the country. Revenue from both has gone to support The Quetico Foundation.

We are blessed to have 4 of the exceptionally talented singer-songwriters from the album with us on this special night. They will be performing wonderful songs from their own respective albums and their song from Coming Home to Quetico. John will be introducing each song from the album and sharing it’s heartfelt inspiration.

George Cipperly: Harry Chapin unknowingly described him pretty well when he sang of Mr. Tanner … “Music was his life. It was not his livelihood,” though he wasn’t nearly as reclusive about it.  George’s career in engineering physics/optics has allowed him (when married life and parenting allow, and while not cycling, running or kayaking) to squeeze in whatever musical involvement he could manage - choral, musical theater, dancing, and of course, his guitar and deeply introspective voice. He most enjoys performing in small intimate settings where he can connect with each individual in the audience, so his recordings reflect that.  His most recent album, “Journeys” conveys that beautifully.

Carol Crittenden: Carol Crittenden has been known to "light up the stage" with her sweet soaring vocals and thoughtful, melodic tunes. She weaves her personal perspective into her work, whether in her emotionally intimate or acclaimed social-justice-minded songs, including her notable song, "RISE." She has recorded and toured as lead singer of Four Celtic Voices, with a #1 CD on the Billboard World Music Chart. Carol was honored to have been selected to perform her original tunes at WFUV DJ John Platt's "On Your Radar" at Rockwood Music Hall in NYC and at the highly-regarded NERFA (Northeast Regional Folk Alliance) 2019 Folk DJ Showcase. Her music is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Bandcamp and more.

Kala Farnham: Kala Farnham set out into the world with one vision: To inspire through musical storytelling. Farnham has garnered numerous awards, serving as Connecticut's State Troubadour, 2020 Falcon Ridge Emerging Artist, and 2019 Rose Garden Performing-Songwriter Contest winner. Farnham's album, "Your Spirit Is a Work of Art", is described by Nick Noble of The Folk Revival as “a work of poetic insight… worth listening to again and again." Drawing from backgrounds in classical education and musical theater, Kala presents a reinvention of folk tradition: her passion for fairytales, history, and narrative medicine draws listeners into imaginative portraits of the familiar world.

Sue Horowitz: Sue Horowitz is an award-winning singer-songwriter who lives in both Ithaca, NY and York Beach, ME.  She has a successful career as a spiritual artist, aka, "the best job in the world", and has appeared at numerous congregations, conferences, music venues, and homes throughout North America.  Her music has been included in worship throughout the US, and has been published in many compilations, including: the Ruach Series, CCAR Haggadah, Kol Isha, Manginot, and Jewish Songs of Protest and Hope.  Sue is the founder and creator of the Jewish Songwriting Cooperative retreat, now in it's seventh year, and loves to lead songwriting workshops.

After turning her attention to more of the Folk/Americana genre, she was honored to be a featured performer at both the DJ Showcase of the Northeast and Midwest Folk Alliances, has had a sold-out show at the famous  Club Passim, and was a standout finalist at the 2022 Falcon Ridge Folk Festival  Emerging Artist Stage.  Sue recently released her 5th CD of original music, "Strings, Wings and Curious Things", which debuted at # 3 on the Folk Radio charts, and had several chart topping singles as well.  Christine Lavin said, "This is one first-rate songwriter".  Her authentic, intimate, and clear voice and guitar playing compliment her wise narrative songwriting.
