Or in Whisky's case; Terroir, Terroir, Terroir.
Bruichladdich's Islay Barley range is all about the provenance of the barley; with all of the barley grown across multiple farms located on Islay. Jim McEwan (former head distiller) and Adam Hannett (current head distiller) believe that the terroir of the barley affects the barley enough to flow through into the flavour and texture that ends up in your glass even after distilling.
This concept is not particularly popular with the large distillers; they've spent decades saying nothing survives the distillation process (which makes one wonder why there's a difference in flavour between rum and whisky then), and they've also spent decades pushing for barley that has the highest yields rather than varieties that are in tune with their environment and produce maximum flavour or texture.
This November, we're going to sample a range of Bruichladdich Islay barley releases alongside a dinner of smoke meats from the Peacemaker kitchen - including 2 from the innaugural release that was distilled in 2004; with the standard release, and a small batch that was aged in Sherry casks and released exclusively at the distillery during Feis Ile 2010 - Islay's annual celebration of all things Islay!
In an auspicious coincidence; this November Bruichladdich in conjunction with The Whisky Club here in Australia are launching the first age-statement Islay Barley release under the Bruichladdich label (unpeated) - so we're going to sample this new 14 year old Islay Barley with Scott Fitzsimons from The Whisky Club!
