INTERNATIONAL PREMIERE of HAMLET  performed by Teatro La Plaza (Peru)

July 19 & 20 at PS21 Pavilion

Hamlet, boldly reimagined by Chela De Ferrari, founding artistic director of Peru’s Teatro La Plaza, adapts Shakespeare’s classic for a group of young actors with Down syndrome. Expressing their desires and frustrations as people whose lives have historically been devalued and ignored, the actors interweave their own stories with the original text to invest new meaning in the play’s central existential question, “To be or not to be?”

Blending personal monologues, classical drama, pop music, dance and wry humor, Teatro La Plaza’s Hamlet offers an eye-opening and provocative look at questions of inclusion and discrimination – making us question our own perceptions and values, but ultimately presenting a joyous celebration of life and theater in all forms

Copresented with the 2024 International Hispanic Theater Festival of Miami

Chela De Ferrari served as the artistic director of Teatro La Plaza until 2021. Born in Lima, she studied painting at the University of Puerto Rico in Rio Piedras and theater at the Club de Teatro de Lima. She spent five years in Córdoba, Argentina, directing the group EXTRAS and staging collective creations and Argentine plays. Upon her return to Peru, she directed several productions at the PUCP (Pontifical Catholic University of Peru) Cultural Center. In 2017, she was appointed to the National Cultural Advisory Commission of the Ministry of Culture, Peru.

About PS21

A vibrant center for contemporary performance in the Hudson Valley, PS21 “presents work that challenges and invites” (The New York Times): adventurous productions by leading and emerging American and international artists in music, dance, and theater, and visionaries creating entirely new genres. On our open-air Pavilion Theater stage, across our expansive, unspoiled grounds, and in the diverse surrounding communities, PS21 cultivates and presents productions that transcend aesthetic boundaries and revitalize existing artistic languages and grammars. Throughout the year, we host developmental residencies for dancers, musicians, actors, and creators of original, even unclassifiable new work. Rooted in community collaboration, PS21’s programming engages creatively with critical global and social issues. It is a mecca for innovative and original artistic voices, a destination for performance that can be experienced nowhere else in the region. PS21’s Pavilion Theater is a green-energy marvel surrounded by 100 acres of unspoiled meadows, trails, and woodlands that are a haven to wildlife and visitors across the region.  Integrated into our unspoiled campus, the theater embodies our commitments to the public: open, inviting, and optimized for their enjoyment and encouraging citizen expression and participation.
