What You Will Learn

It’s that time of the year again, when we break out our pressure canners and get to work.

Join us as we donate our time to teach the important practice of preserving our homegrown favorites.

The practice of canning, preserves fresh food by removing oxygen, destroying enzymes, and preventing the growth of bacteria, yeasts and mold. Using proper canning methods is extremely important in keeping your family safe when eating home canned foods. It is important to follow the proper canning practices of carefully selecting and washing fresh produce, peeling (according to recipe), hot packing, adding acids (lemon juice or vinegar), using acceptable jars and self-sealing lids, and processing jars in a boiling-water or pressure canner for the correct period of time!

In this class, you will receive instructions from numerous knowledgable Calvert County Residents, who are donating their time to share easy. fool-proof practices of preservation.

Discover food security through the abundance our community farms have to offer and extend your bountiful harvest of summer into the colder months of the year.

This class is in partnership with Farming 4 Hunger and College of Southern Maryland where all donations will be sent.
