The Cape Fear Bonsai Society invites you to spend an afternoon with trees.
Our Summer Bonsai Exhibition will feature a curated display of bonsai created and cared for by members of the society. Bonsai artists work with living trees to create the impression of age, endurance, and landscape in miniature, capturing the quiet beauty and character found in nature. Through careful pruning, wiring, and years of patient cultivation, ordinary trees are guided into forms that suggest windswept coastlines, mountain ridges, and forests shaped by time and weather.
Although the art of bonsai originated in China and was refined and transformed over centuries in Japan, its spirit is closely tied to the landscapes where it is practiced. In the Cape Fear region, our coastal forests, maritime winds, sandy soils, and resilient native species offer their own inspiration for bonsai artists.
The weathered silhouettes of ancient bald cypress, the windswept live oaks along the coast at Fort Fisher, and the dense canopies of yaupon holly shaped by salt air and sun at Wrightsville Beach all reflect natural forces that bonsai seeks to express. These familiar landscapes remind us that the character we admire in bonsai already exists around us in full scale.
This exhibition reflects that connection between place and practice. Each tree represents an artist’s interpretation of nature—an effort to capture the character, movement, and quiet strength of trees as we encounter them in the landscapes of our region.
Visitors will have the opportunity to view the trees up close, appreciate their unique forms and textures, and speak with members of the Cape Fear Bonsai Society about the art and care of bonsai.
Short guided introductions to the bonsai on display will be offered during the exhibition for visitors who are new to bonsai.
A small number of select bonsai vendors will also be present offering trees and bonsai supplies for those interested in exploring the art of bonsai further.
Seen closely, bonsai invites us to slow down and notice the subtle details of trees—the movement of a trunk, the texture of bark, and the quiet balance between strength and delicacy. In miniature, these living compositions echo the same natural forces that shape the landscapes of the Cape Fear region.
We invite you to spend time with these trees, explore their forms, and enjoy an afternoon celebrating the artistry of bonsai and the enduring beauty of the natural world at the New Hanover County Arboretum.
