Description
Join 19th century abolitionist and educator, Charlotte Forten, in an antebellum tour of Salem. Learn about the progress African-Americans are making in winning equal treatment and the many arduous steps still to go. See the locations of anti-slavery activism and learn about the people who nourished Charlotte's education and artistry as she became Salem Normal School's first Black graduate and Salem's first Black teacher to teach white children. Hear samples of young Charlotte's poetry and parody. Get insight into the remarkable life and contribution that Charlotte would make over the next decades.
Please wear comfortable shoes for walking and standing on uneven brick and cobblestone.
We will start at and return to Armory Park, at the National Park Service Visitor's Center, 2 New Liberty Street, Salem. The Visitor's Center has water fountains and bathrooms, which may be used before the tour.
The tour will walk rain or shine, but may be cancelled in the case of forecasted extreme weather. In such a case you will be notified via the contact info you provide at check out.
This tour is geared to people already familiar with the concept of American chattel slavery. We ask that parents and caregivers think carefully about preparing any children who may be in attendance.
