Chicora Voices, a professional choir based in Greenville, SC, presents “Birdsong and Fragrant Flowers,” a concert of East Asian choral music. Discover the beauty and elegance of the traditional and modern soundscapes of East Asia through this vibrant program of charming folk songs and new works for choir from China, Taiwan, Korea, and Japan.
 
Chicora Voices will be joined by Queens University's Royal Voices of Charlotte in this concert!

ABOUT ROYAL VOICES OF CHARLOTTE

Royal Voices of Charlotte was formed in 2019 by Dr. Justin Smith, Director of Choral Activities at Queens University, as an auditioned mixed choir performing a wide range of repertoire. They have performed by invitation at the North Carolina American Choral Directors Association state conference, sung at Carnegie Hall, and collaborated with Bach Akademie Charlotte at their summer Charlotte Bach Festival. Royal Voices have received acclaim nationally and internationally, winning First Prize in the Mixed Choir competition at the International Choral Kathaumixw in British Columbia, Canada and performing as an invited choir at the National Conference of the National Collegiate Choral Organization in Atlanta. They also won the First Prize and a Special Jury Prize for Best Performance of a Contemporary Work at the Preveza International Choral Festival in Greece. This season finds them collaborating with Chicora Voices, Opera Carolina, as well as Caroline Calouche Dance Company for their production of Carmina Burana.

ABOUT THE CONDUCTOR OF ROYAL VOICES OF CHARLOTTE

Dr. Justin Smith is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at Queens University of Charlotte, where he conducts two choirs, directs the opera program, and teaches courses in music history, conducting, and film music. At Queens, he holds the prestigious Noble Faculty Fellowship. For six years, he served as the Director of Choral Activities and held the Joseph Naumes Endowed Chair in Music at Marylhurst University in Portland, Oregon. In 2020, he founded the Royal Voices of Charlotte. In its short existence, he has led them to national and international acclaim, performing at the National Collegiate Choral Organization's national conference and winning first place at both the Kathaumixw Festival in Canada and the Preveza Festival in Greece. Dr. Smith is also the director of the Portland Phoenix Chamber Choir in Portland, Oregon, winning awards at choral competitions in Ireland, Italy, and Latvia and appearing by invitation at the Northwestern conference of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). He holds a DMA in Choral Conducting from the Moores School of Music, University of Houston, with additional degrees from Wesleyan University and the University of Oregon.
