Chicora Voices Inaugural Concert: "Dancing with Death: Music of Schütz and Distler"

Chicora Voices, Greenville's new professional choir, will hold its inaugural performance, "Dancing with Death," at 7pm on November 11, 2022, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Taylors. Directed by Philip Reed, Chicora Voices brings together musicians from around the southeast to perform ambitious programs of choral music. 

The program will feature Heinrich Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien and Hugo Distler’s Totentanz. The former is a ravishingly beautiful example of early Baroque composition, a German requiem composed for the funeral of a nobleman in 1635. Totentanz, or "Dance of Death," composed in 1934, is a dramatic work inspired by a danse macabre painting in Lübeck, Germany, in which a personified Death calls reluctant characters from all walks of life to join in his dance.
