Chunky Chains with Brandy Boyd
June 15, 2025
10 am-5 pm
Soldering real silver jewelry doesn’t require a setup that costs hundreds of dollars! In this workshop, we will make a chunky silver chain using different kinds of sterling silver wire and a butane micro torch. You’ll have the option to shape your links using a variety of mandrels, texture the silver using hammers, construct your own clasp, and have options to polish to a bright finish or patina to bring out the texture. We will go over ways to get different textures out of normal hammers and how to get the best results using texturing hammers, different ways of soldering the links together, including pick soldering, and learn a bit about how aspect ratios will affect the look and strength of the chain.
Depending on the speed at which you work and the complexity of your chain, you will complete either a bracelet or a necklace. If you have a torch and brick, jewelry pliers, hammers, and jewelry files, you are welcome to bring them for use in class, but you are not required. All tools and materials are provided.
Safety glasses are recommended. Please wear cotton/natural fiber clothing or bring a work apron.
Your class kit includes Pro-polish pad, medium solder, 14 gauge sterling silver wire, 16 gauge sterling silver wire, assorted specialty sterling wires, sterling silver jump rings, and studio consumables (flux, pickle, polishing, and patina chemicals). A step-by-step hand out is also provided.
