Through the Eyes of a Geologist: Understanding Coastal Change in Northwest Indiana

When we look at the communities that are established along Lake Michigan, it can be easy to forget that natural coastal systems are meant to be dynamic. This presentation examines how the Indiana coast developed through the recent geologic past to create remarkable landscapes that includes dunes, wetlands, and the globally rare ridge-and-swale ecosystems. It takes a closer look at how sediment moves in the nearshore system and how the shoreline responds to human development along the coast as lake levels fluctuate.

Dr. Erin Argyilan is a Professor of Geology at Indiana University Northwest in Gary, Indiana. Much of her work has focused on exploring the connections between lake level fluctuations and shoreline change. She is particularly interested in helping local communities and visitors better understand the impacts of human activity along the shoreline to create a more sustainable future.
