The University of Memphis' Collegium Musicum is pleased to present an evening of Water Music at The Brooks Museum, featuring works of Baroque masters George Frideric Handel and Georg Philipp Telemann.
On the program will be selections from Handel's Water Music--written, famously, for a concert honoring King George I performed on a barge on the River Thames--and a full performance of Telemann's Water Music, also known as Hamburg Ebb and Flow. This piece was not performed on water but was written to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the Hamburg Admiralty. The work features colorful evocations of nautical themes, often referencing Greek mythology.
The Collegium Musicum is the Early Music ensemble of University of Memphis' Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music. Focusing on music primarily of the Baroque and early Classical eras, the ensemble seeks to present its music as much as possible in the way audiences of the day would have heard it—using instruments constructed in the manner of the time and performing in the musical style of the period.
