Description

Join us for a screening of Coming to the Plains.

A multimedia exhibit about leaving home and finding a new one.

Coming to the Plains began as an oral history project with the purpose of capturing the stories of immigration from Latin@ individuals from various countries who have settled in Central Nebraska.  University of Nebraska at Kearney faculty members Dr. Michelle Warren, Laurinda Weisse, and Jacob Rosdail worked with students to collect interviews from 20 individuals discussing, among other things, how and why they came to the area and what challenges they’ve faced upon arrival.  Participants came from Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras,Colombia, Guatemala, and The Dominican Republic, and currently live in Grand Island, Hastings, Lexington, and Kearney, Nebraska.

Coming to the Plains is developing relationships with Latin@ community members and community organizations through participants and also through the many UNK Latin@ first generation students involved with the project. At least a dozen UNK students have worked on Coming to the Plains, most of whom identify as Latinx. Their work has been in creating recruitment materials, recruiting participants, asking family and friends to participate, identifying appropriate interview questions and venues, transcribing, and translating interviews.

The project has so far produced a touring exhibit, a series of short documentaries, and a digital repository of all of the interviews available in both English and Spanish.

This is the last night that both the short documentaries and the touring exhibit will be on display at KANEKO.

The screening will be followed by a question and answer session with Dr. Michelle Warren on Thursday, September 15, 2022, 600pm.

Take a peek at this conversation with Esthefany Lopez-Cruz.

KANEKO Galleries will not be open to the public on this evening.
