211 Main StreetGet a behind-the-scenes look at historic preservation in progress! Join us for a rare opportunity to see portions of our 1752 Joseph Webb House undergoing interior restoration work, and hear directly from conservation architect TR Revella-Hamilton of New York and carpenters Nathanael Ulfers and Avery Toves of Virginia. The team will be stripping paint and remedying issues with interior shutter and door hardware. The conservation team will explain their methods and talk about the continued importance of historical techniques in the maintenance of old houses. Perhaps you'll even learn something you can apply to your own home!
This is the first time much of this woodwork will be exposed since the construction of the house in the 1750s, even though the house has undergone multiple transformations since then in the hands of the Webb and Welles families and later the noted antiquarian Wallace Nutting and the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America in The State of Connecticut.
This project is part of a long history of preservation and commemoration at the Webb House, where Washington and Rochambeau famously met in 1781 to plot the Yorktown Campaign and where countless young Continental officers dined, sometimes alongside British prisoners of war. Preserving the fabric of this house and studying how it has changed over time is integral to the work we do at WDS to our nation's colonial history.
