Description

Journey to 17th-century Rome with an intimate program of secular cantatas by Giacomo Carissimi and Luigi Rossi, two composers who helped define the emerging Baroque cantata.

Hear expressive works for solo, two, and three voices with basso continuo, including Ahi, non tornaScrivete, occhi dolentiUn infelice coreA piè d’un verde alloroAlmeno un pensiero, and Sciolto havean dall’alte sponde.

The program also explores Carissimi’s Missa “Sciolto havean dall’alte sponde,” a rare Mass setting derived from the opening of the cantata. The connection is particularly striking in the Kyrie and Christe.

Join us for music from a remarkable moment between the Renaissance madrigal and the fully developed Baroque.
