Description

Ushaw is home to a wealth of rare and unique treasures. Join us and experience the rich history of St. Cuthbert's Ring, in the second feature of our Conversation with our Curator event on Thursday 30th March.

Led by our Curator, Claire Marsland, spend a relaxed afternoon immersing yourself in the story of one of the most religiously, and historically, significant items found in England today.

This month, go behind the scenes and learn about St. Cuthbert's Ring, made of gold and sapphire, dating all the way back to the thirteenth century.

Originally placed in the tomb of St. Cuthbert at Durham Cathedral in the medieval period, at the time of the Reformation under Henry VIII, the ring was spirited away for safe-keeping.

With it eventually ending up in a Catholic convent in Paris. Then in the 1850s, it was felt appropriate that the relic should return to County Durham. The ring was then gifted to Ushaw in 1858 and has been treasured by Ushaw ever since.

Prior to the talk, enjoy a micro afternoon tea filled with delicious sweet/savoury treats and prosecco, the perfect celebratory fizz to enjoy your visit. (Hot drinks will also be provided as an alternative).
