Come join vocalist, ensemble director, composer, Vocal De-Armorer™ and somatic singing teacher Marisa Michelson for the first ever community chor at PS21 for seven weeks of delicious collective creating and connection through voice!

And that is not a typo, it’s really “chor.” Chor comes from the Latin Cor meaning: heart, soul, mind; and the Greek Khoros meaning: to dance in a circle.  Of course, chor is also meant to evoke the core, the center and the essence of ALL THAT IS. Chor is in “chorus” and “choreography.”  The gestures and impulses we will be working with might become voice or they might become movement. We will be doing both during our time together.

We begin, however, with singing and voice-giving.  That is our starting point and way of skill-building.

Each class will include listening practices, simple and gentle freeing vocal practices, and vocal improvisation time.  We may also learn and practice simple songs by Marisa, and work on “non-formance” - longer form movement and voice improvisations.  Our final class may become an open rehearsal where we will improvise a piece for friends and family.

Open to age 16+

FAQ:

Do I need to be an experienced singer to join?

You do not.  All are welcome.  We will make music (and movement) together from exactly where we are.

What will each class include?

Each class will include listening practices, simple and gentle freeing vocal practices, and vocal improvisation time.  We may also learn and practice simple songs by Marisa, and work on “non-formance” - longer form movement and voice improvisations.

Do I need to read music?

You do not!  We may use sheet music, but all teaching will also happen by ear.

Will we be learning songs?

We may learn some simple songs to sing together!

Will our improvising be similar to “circle singing”?

This is not at all like circle singing, meaning the guiding structures for improvising are not based on repetition, or on adding harmony, counterpoint, or rhythmic patterns to melodies.  We will be learning to tune into our bodies somatically, and we will be playing with “gesture” - tuning to that which is alive behind the form of the music. About PS21

A vibrant center for contemporary performance in the Hudson Valley, PS21 “presents work that challenges and invites” (The New York Times): adventurous productions by leading and emerging American and international artists in music, dance, and theater, and visionaries creating entirely new genres. On our open-air Pavilion Theater stage, across our expansive, unspoiled grounds, and in the diverse surrounding communities, PS21 cultivates and presents productions that transcend aesthetic boundaries and revitalize existing artistic languages and grammars. Throughout the year, we host developmental residencies for dancers, musicians, actors, and creators of original, even unclassifiable new work. Rooted in community collaboration, PS21’s programming engages creatively with critical global and social issues. It is a mecca for innovative and original artistic voices, a destination for performance that can be experienced nowhere else in the region. PS21’s Pavilion Theater is a green-energy marvel surrounded by 100 acres of unspoiled meadows, trails, and woodlands that are a haven to wildlife and visitors across the region.  Integrated into our unspoiled campus, the theater embodies our commitments to the public: open, inviting, and optimized for their enjoyment and encouraging citizen expression and participation.
