Description

The centerpiece of this lovely summer evening will be the Paul Taylor Dance Company. The Company will be in residence at PS21 for three weeks (June 21 – July 4 and August 1 – 8), rehearsing and performing some of Paul Taylor‘s most beloved masterworks including AureoleCompany B and Esplanade. During the residency, the Company will be reconstructing The Green Table and at the Gala will hold a performance of the work following its adaptation. You will be part of a conversation about the role of dance in society then and now and enjoy a delicious supper in our fields.

6 – 10 pm

All proceeds support our 2021 Season and local education initiatives as well as the maintenance of our 100 acres of open lands.

At PS21, we are constantly monitoring the progress of New York’s phased reopening of businesses, schools, recreation areas, and nonprofits and will update you on any changes to our Gala plans.

Aureole

Aureole, created in 1962, was Taylor’s first major success. Set to baroque music by George Frideric Handel, the work marks Taylor’s departure from contemporary composers. Aureole showcases Taylor’s trademark style of athletic, often idiosyncratic movement steeped in both ballet and modern techniques.

The Green Table

Eighty-nine years after Kurt Jooss’s groundbreaking debut of The Green Table, the narrative is just as relevant, and the drama just a searing as the day it was produced.

Witnessing his country being torn apart by nationalism, populism, and anti-Semitism, Kurt Jooss choreographed a 37-minute ballet in 1932, The Green Table, subtitled “A dance of death in eight scenes.” Jooss and his collaborator, Jewish composer Fritz Cohen, had an affinity for art that addressed moral issues, and they abhorred plotless dances. With fascism on the rise in Germany, they worked together to create a ballet with a strong anti-war statement, which to this day is one of the most powerful dances made in the 20th century.
