Description

Craft, Conversation, & Coffee:

A Workshop on Legacy & Latch-Hook

With Amanda Banks & Saudade Toxosi

Coffee is one of the most traded commodities in the world. Its supply chain touches nearly every continent and carries a long, complicated history of land, labor, and extraction.

Artist Amanda Banks has spent time tracing her own family's connection to that history. The burlap sacks she latch-hooks aren't just reclaimed materials. They're a way of working through what she's learned, stitch by stitch.

In this hands-on workshop, Banks will teach participants basic latch-hook techniques using reclaimed coffee sacks and recycled yarn. While you work, she'll share what she's uncovered about her family's roots in the coffee industry and invite a broader conversation about the systems design makes visible and invisible.

Artist Saudade Toxosi joins the session with a guided coffee tasting, exploring how geography, tradition, and process shape what ends up in your cup.

You'll leave with a finished or in-progress fiber piece, and a different way of thinking about something you encounter every day.

What you'll do:

  • Learn basic latch-hook techniques (no experience required)

  • Create a small organic pattern using reclaimed coffee sacks and yarn

  • Participate in a guided coffee tasting and brewing demonstration

  • Engage in conversation while you make

  • Explore MODA’s latest exhibition!

About Amanda Banks

Amanda Banks is a materially driven, self-taught visual artist based in North Georgia whose practice explores environmental observation, fiber art, and intentional gathering. Working with found and reclaimed materials—including second-hand yarn, discarded plastics, and old technologies—Amanda creates tactile works shaped by the landscapes and communities around them. They serve as Board Secretary for the Rome Area Council for the Arts and have led workshops nationally with schools, museums, and arts organizations. Amanda’s work has been exhibited at venues including Atlanta Contemporary, Spruill Gallery, and Stove Works. They are currently developing immersive installations and collaborative community-based projects centered on material exploration and storytelling.

About Saudade Toxosi

Saudade Toxosi is a multidisciplinary artist working across painting, collage, photography, sound, and installation. Her practice explores memory, cultural identity, and the poetics of everyday materials through layered, sensory approaches to image-making and storytelling. Alongside her visual work, she engages communal and experiential formats that center ritual, presence, and shared reflection, often inviting audiences into slower, more attentive ways of engaging with material and meaning.
