Congregation Rodeph Sholom firmly believes that everyone should have access to Jewish wisdom and actively engage in learning with others. Inspired by this belief and our mutual love for Torah, Congregation Rodeph Sholom and Pardes Institute of Jewish Studies are partnering in a joint Talmud study pilot that will be held at CRS in the first quarter of 2023.

The almost 2 million words in the vast sea of text known as the Talmud reflects 2000 years of Jewish history, heritage and identity. This is Torah that belongs to all of us, but the textual complexity and foreignness of a page of Talmud can interfere with a sense of intimate connection.  In our CRS/Pardes collaboration, we will aim to demystify these texts. In so doing, we hope to unleash the power of the text and point the way to contemporary meaning and relevant application that can instruct our daily lives.

Our Inaugural Winter Institute will offer a two-track series of Talmud classes: one for the novice who has never encountered Talmud and the other for the advanced beginner who has some familiarity with the text. Both classes will study the rich topic of Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World) as it is presented in tractate Gittin and explore the contours of the page of Talmud with guided questions and explanations tailored to both levels.
