Description
Join us at the Prizery where a twenty-piece ensemble from the Danville Symphony Orchestra at the Prizery will perform the timeless classic Peter and the Wolf on Saturday afternoon, June 12th at 4:00 PM. With the goals of uplifting and offering fun to children and the community, who have been isolated during the pandemic, the Symphony brings story characters to life through a 40-minute narration and musical performance.
Peter and the Wolf has been called “a symphonic fairy tale for children.” It was written in 1936 by Russian composer, Sergei Prokofiev, who was commissioned by the director of the Moscow Children’s Theatre. He chose as his subject the story of a boy and his animal friends attempting to capture a wolf. For 85 years the musical has introduced children to musical instruments and engaged adults in the lyrical melodies. Particular instruments portray the characters in the story.
The characters and Danville orchestra members who bring them to life are:
The bird: flute played by Katherine Walker
The duck: oboe played by Susan Kundert
The cat: clarinet played by Eric Sah
The wolf: French horn played by Paul Manz, Gene Beazlie and Frank Hussey
The grandfather: bassoon played by Phil Atkins
The hunters: timpani played by Desiree Shaffer
Peter: strings played by Colleen Chenail, Abby Chism, Alice Freeman, Ulric Schweizer, Theresa Fox, Margaret Petty, Sam
Spicer, and Austin Propst
Other Instrumentalists: Jim Martin on trombone, Dave Weilnau on trumpet, Daryl Green on percussion
Narrator: Jacky Miller
The concert is $12 for adults and $6 for children 5 and over. Conductor Peter Perret and the Danville Symphony invite the public to attend. Children will receive a small take-home gift as they exit.
