Rhythm & Jews: Klezmer Madness
Look out! Coming at you like a runaway train, it’s Rhythm & Jews. On Tuesday, October 10, 7pm, New Orleans’ new Klezmer music supergroup will blow into the Broadside! Founded by American/Canadian trumpeter/composer producer David Buchbinder, Rhythm & Jews features the cream of NOLA musicians playing in the field of klezmer, the powerful, enchanting Eastern European Jewish dance and celebration music that almost disappeared before staging and incredible comeback starting in the 1970s.
Buchbinder, born in Kansas City and raised in St. Louis, New York and Toronto, is an important figure in the international scene of new Jewish culture, as leader of the Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band, the founder of the Ashkenaz Festival and through many other projects. And he’s more excited than ever to share this music with new audiences. Buchbinder started spending time in the Crescent City in 2019 and moved here in 2022, and he immediately began playing with all of the fine musicians in Jewish music mainstays New Orleans Klezmer Allstars and the Panorama Jazz Band. And it is these two projects are the collective source of the members of this new, exciting group. Get up on this wild Jewish musical train now, and ride it all the way down the line!
