Design Against Racism: Creating Work That Transforms Communities

a book signing and talk by Omari Souza

About This Event

Join us at MODA for a powerful evening with Omari Souza, founder of the State of Black Design conference and editor of the newly released book Design Against Racism: Creating Work That Transforms Communities.

Souza will share the stories, ideas, and strategies behind this groundbreaking collection, which calls out design’s past shortcomings while showing how it can be a force for equity and positive change. Together, we’ll dive into themes like:

  • How the white gaze has shaped design—and how to challenge it
  • Language as both a barrier and a tool for resistance
  • Hip-Hop Architecture and Afrofuturism as design strategies for innovation and justice
  • What it means to truly design with communities, not just for them

What to Expect:

  • A talk and Q&A with Omari Souza with guests: Marryam Moma (Visual Artist), Atlanta-based Tanzanian-Nigerian artist who creates analog collages that explore the Black experience, celebrating the strength and joy of bodies while challenging societal perceptions & Aneya Raynor (Moderator), an award-winning editorial and graphic designer based in Atlanta, Georgia.
  • Insights on how design can fight racism and spark transformation
  • An opportunity to connect with fellow design enthusiasts and advocates for equity in design.
  • A chance for your copy of Design Against Racism: Creating Work That Transforms Communities signed by the author.

This is a must-attend event for designers, students, educators, and anyone passionate about social justice and the power of design to drive change.
