Description

While a Fish Fry in the South can be synonymous with everything from a high school football fundraiser to a church social to a show of political bandstanding, there’s never any debate about why a good fish fry is one of the happiest of culinary adventures.

It’s all about the type of fresh fish, some say. Others pay tribute to their grandfather’s secret coating mix or their Mom’s cole slaw. A few stand solidly by their hushpuppies. But when it comes to preserving this grandly greasy eating tradition, we’re all swimming in the same fish bowl – and it’s up to each of us to do our part to protect our rivers, streams, lakes and oceans.

Come celebrate and learn about aquaculture in the region as well as how to responsibly toss your hook into the water. You’ll hear from outdoor enthusiasts, conservationists, trout farmers and storytellers who are always good for entertaining us with the tale of the one that got away. As a special bonus, each of our talented fish frying teams will contribute their own special recipe for our favorite fish fry condiment: Chow Chow.

Chow Chow Food + Culture Festival

Chow Chow's mission is to celebrate and enrich the unique foodways of the Southern Appalachian region. Chow Chow Food + Culture Festival is the organization's flagship annual event, held every year on the weekend after Labor Day. In 2023 we will gather September 7-10th to eat, drink, and be merry while we explore the themes of Cultivating, Preserving, Collborating, and Innovating with a robust line-up of presenters.

As makers, chefs, artists, farmers and business owners, our vision is an equitable and thriving regional food system, where culinary and creative enterprise are central to community identity and resilience. We welcome the collective sum of differences, life experiences, knowledge, self-expression, and talent our makers and guests bring to Chow Chow, and we look forward to celebrating together.
