On behalf of the Concordia University Irvine Music Department, Professors Siri Lyon and Elizabeth Low-Atwater invite you to the 6th annual Double Reed Day on Saturday, April 1st, 2023! Open to all oboists, bassoonists, music directors and parents.
Double Reed Day 2023 will give insight into the world of oboists & bassoonists through interactive reed making sessions, expert vendors and a fun, collaborative group performance! Attendees can register as a participant for the full hands-on experience, or as an observer for the educational perspective.
This free event will feature:
Reed Making Sessions
Session #1 is in lecture format, giving a general overview (or review!) of the reed making process.
Session #2 is a hands-on lesson with reed making tools, including knives. Oboists will learn how to scrape and adjust reeds, and bassoonists will learn how to wire, turban and cut the tip to finish the reed.
Free Instrument Maintenance
Angela Wells, instrument repair expert from The Reedery, will be available to perform minor instrument repairs on participant instruments. Learn some repair basics as well as instrument repair tips you can do at home!
Vendor Exhibition & Raffle Prize
Meet some of the best double reed vendors in the industry! The exhibition will feature local and national vendors. Plus, you'll have the chance to win prizes in our raffle!
Double Reed Concert
A concert open to friends and family will close the event! Held in Zhang Hall, the concert will feature chamber music performed by the CUI Double Reed Studio, as well as a piece for double reed choir! All attendees can participate in the final piece - music will be sent in advance and the day will begin with a group rehearsal.
We hope that you can join us!
