101 Patrick StreetThis is a group discussion following the regular weekly sitting practice which takes place one Saturday each month. Our usual 2 hour meditation practice will be shorter to allow for the hour long discussion.
We resume our Dharma Dialogue series this month next weekend after practice on Saturday, December 6th, with a classic (and classical) teaching from the Lotus Sutra: the Parable of the Burning House.
The proliferation of different, sometimes seemingly contradictory teachings that have appeared through the 2,500 years of Buddhist traditions, eras and geographies can beg the questions: which is true? And why so many?
The parable teaches of the importance of ‘skillful means’ in meeting people where they are. The Buddha made use of provisional teachings as compassionate strategy, not as deception. Different personality types, inclinations and capacities cannot all be reached effectively with a single method or teaching; tailoring to each ensures each finds their footing on the path.
And after all, no matter how distinct the journey and features, each river finds its way into the one great ocean.
Find the parable reading here.
We will host the Dharma Dialogue this month on Saturday, December 6, following an hour of practice starting at 10 am. Join us!
