Description

On September 24, 2025, the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief replica, built by the Buffalo Maritime Center, embarked to retrace Governor DeWitt Clinton’s historic 1825 voyage, beginning a thirty-three-day Bicentennial journey from Buffalo to New York Harbor.

Central New Yorkers will have the opportunity to take part in this commemoration when the boat arrives in the Syracuse area on Saturday, October 4 at midday, entering Onondaga Lake to dock at Onondaga Lake Park near the Salt Museum. Welcoming events will include community dignitaries, symbolic White Pine plantings honoring the Haudenosaunee, and the collecting of water for a later Wedding of the Waters. The Seneca Chief will also be open as a floating museum until 6 PM, with free family activities available on shore.

On Sunday, October 5, the commemoration continues from 11 AM to 5 PM with booths, local museums and community organizations, and Reflections on Erie’s Waters — a special program at the Skä•noñh Great Law of Peace Center exploring the Canal’s impact on the Haudenosaunee. This symposium will feature talks and discussions that invite reflection on the legacies of the Canal from multiple perspectives. To register for the symposium, visit https://www.simpletix.com/e/2025-sloan-lecture-series-tickets-196528.

On Monday, October 6, the Erie Canal Boat Seneca Chief will depart toward Brewerton, continuing its journey east before ultimately heading to New York City.
