Description

Estuarine Creatures (EC), is a transdisciplinary performance exploring the layered identities of its performers—queer and multiracial, feminine and masculine, expressing elements of church in the rural South and club culture in the Southwest. Much like an estuary, where salt and freshwater blend in a partially enclosed space, the work examines what it means to be “held” in inbetweenness.

After early iterations performed at ASU Kerr Cultural Center (April 2024) and Phoenix Art Museum (August 2024), and expanded in a September 2025 residency in partnership with Dance Exchange, A-Ibanez Museum, and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. The full evening length work premieres March in Tempe at Starlight Gardens and Ajo at the Curley School for the Tri-National Symposium.

Estuarine Creatures is part of a larger body of work called Process in Place. Process in Place curates workshops, performances, and site-specific residencies inspired by the ecological and cultural character of place. The creative methods respond to each location’s inherent cycles and systems, positioning place as both collaborator and catalyst.

This performance is made possible by generous support from Starlight Memorial Park. This project is partially funded by a City of Tempe - Community Arts Grant.
