Description

Simple in form, ubiquitous in closets, and endlessly versatile, the hoodie is a staple of modern dress. Yet it’s also a lightning rod — a garment entangled with fear, power, prejudice, and protest. Depending on who wears it and where, the hoodie can suggest danger, anonymity, defiance, comfort, or cool. Worn by skaters, athletes, designers, protestors, and presidents, it raises provocative questions: Who gets to wear a hoodie without consequence? What does a hood hide — and what does it reveal?

In Fall 2025 and Winter 2026, MODA will present The Hoodie, a bold and timely exhibition originally curated by Lou Stoppard for the Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam and reimagined for Atlanta, the exhibition explores the hoodie as both garment and cultural lightning rod — with particular emphasis on the social dynamics that shape life in our city and region.
